Everyone says that to be a runner all you need is a pair of shoes. Now that I really am a runner (or a jogger, at least), I know that this is not true. You do need shoes, but you should probably have a decent pair. For me, that means shelling out for Asics, usually in the "Gel" family: not cheap. Then there is the running wear. These days cotton is a no-no, unless you are a novice and running only 2-3 miles. You're supposed to wear high-tech "wicking" fabric to keep you warm and dry. And don't forget the sports bra and fancy socks. Bottled water is no good, no matter how exotic it's origin. You need special hydrating sports drinks, nutritional gels and powders (pre- and post- run) and a special carb-loading diet to prep for long runs. And if you live in snow country, you need a membership to a gym with an indoor track or you need to love the treadmill.
I have tried all of these tricks and have reluctantly accepted that about half of them really are useful. But, aside from gum and Chapstick, the best recent improvement to running is definitely the i-shuffle. I love this thing. It is so light and small that I truly don't notice it. That is saying something from someone who takes off her watch and every piece of jewelry but her wedding band to run. Last Saturday I ran 10 miles (my longest distance ever) with the shuffle ear-buds in the whole time. It was useful and inspiring, so I decided to share my Running playlist with the other runners in the family. Here we go:

Not like it really excuses some of the content, but in case you are worried about the state of my soul, I do have all the clean versions where applicable.
Good luck with your running, girls: see you in Moab!

My running music trick: latin dance music. My friend Lina gifted me a dance mix last year and it is the inspiration for training. My favorites: Guallando by Fulanito and Lloraras by Oscar d'Leon. Something about music designed to get you back on the dance floor when you're hot, sweaty, and exhausted is verry motivational.
And 10 miles!!! You're amazing. Good work Rachie.
Hey! Nice play list! I truly admire your training - something I could never do. Pretty random that I ran across your family's blog, huh? Exciting! It's perfect for you - your such a good writer.
(also, Rachie--have you tried Clif's Shot Blocks? They're energy gummies, and I'm a girl who loves her gummies. I tried Margarita and was very impressed--with taste at least. The second time around. Anyway. I think Dad is planning on coming down to see us run--wahoo!)
Emily! Hello. I am glad you are here. We are just trying this format out for our family. Ke: did you know about "power" jelly belly's? Right there in the jelly belly section. I think they are gross, and I prefer to eat my jelly belly's for the sugar. Eating them because they are good for your workout just makes me kind of grouchy.
I love the power jelly bellies! First, they seem to really work for me. Second, I'd much rather down a package of red-flavored jelly bellies than the energy goo. I'll use it, but there's always a moment for me when I'm not sure I'm going to make it...
